New digital learning tool on climate and climate change
On 6 June, Zemgale Region human resource and competence development centre held a workshop for science teachers of grades 1-3 on "How to tell students about climate change interactively?".
The teachers were presented a teaching tool developed with partners from Lithuania and Croatia. The tool is designed to support teachers in educating primary school pupils about the dangerous effects of climate change on the Earth, by developing a respectful attitude towards nature, making them aware of the consequences of their daily actions, and encouraging them to live more environmentally friendly lives.
The teachers got an insight into climate change and the factors that have a significant impact on it. Some of the most visible effects of climate change are not only changes in average temperatures, but also changes in ocean currents, floods and droughts, severe storms and continuous sea level rise due to melting polar ice. The expert offered concrete solutions and advice on what each of us can do to mitigate the adverse effects, both by trying to think about everyday habits to live more environmentally friendly and by practising zero-waste living.
In the second part of the event the teachers had hands-on Eco-workshops, practiced various science experiments and interactive exercises developed in the framework of "Climate and its changes". The theoretical basis of the developed material is linked to concrete practical tasks that can be carried out individually to consolidate the knowledge acquired, as well as in small groups and within the classroom.
More than 50 teachers from Zemgale region schools participated in the workshop.
The teaching tool was developed within the Erasmus+ KA2 project "Digital for Climate" (project number: 2021-1-LV01-KA220-SCH-000029630). The project brings together partners from Latvia (lead partner), Lithuania and Croatia. The project is co-funded by the European Union.
