Science on Stage Travel Exchange Visit – The Science Behind Magic
As part of a Science on Stage Travel Exchange visit organised between Rute Oliveira from Portugal and Adrian Allan from the UK, they presented a workshop to teachers and hosted a Science Fair at the Nobel Algarve British International School in Lagoa, Portugal.
On the 2nd of May, the 31 participants that attended the workshop were shown science magic tricks by Rute and Adrian, most of which had been demonstrated at various Science on Stage webinars. The teachers attending had the opportunity to try the demonstrations themselves and were given a resource pack to take home. Earlier in the day Adrian had the opportunity to present magic to nearly 70 children between 3 and 5.
On the 3rd and 4th of May, a Science Fair with the theme 'The Science Behind the Magic' took place in the school. The fair was organised by the secondary school and 3rd cycle students who entertained fellow students, staff and parents with science magic tricks. This was coordinated by Rute and support for the students was provided from Rute and Adrian.
The activities were diverse, designed to promote scientific literacy and encourage students to improve their communication skills in both Portuguese and English. Additionally, the fair helped students develop organisational skills, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
Rute and Adrian also performed and recorded videos of magical science demonstrations which will be made available for teachers to view as part of their joint project.
Science on Stage Portugal has also published a text about the exchange on their website. You can find it here.
